Cedar Rapids Floods 2008

I happened to watch the TODAY show on Friday.  There was a video clip from Cedar Rapids regarding the floods.  It showed a lady and her nine children interviewed by Matt Lauer.   The family was evacuated from their house, the water was up to the roof, the mother got out with 5 baskets of “stuff” and had recently lost her job.   Here is the clip:

There are 3,200 homes flooded in the Cedar Rapids area.  It’s Cedar River is suppose to crest at 31.8 feet…compared with the 19.27 feet in the 1993 floods.  Iowa has declared 83 counties out of 99 disaster areas.  It makes me feel helpless.

Today my in-laws had a crew of 20 relatives work non-stop for 9 hours in the flood infested basement.  They have the 58 inches down to a mere 4 inches as I write this post.  They carried box after box of ruined material out of their basement…. to a “burn” pile.  Their homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage for their home.   Luckily they can salvage their 2nd story belongings.

Continue to look for future blogs…hopefully it will be a little more positive!

  1. I feel so bad for some of these people. The same thing happened to my relatives too.
